The Hawks have been stuck in place since reaching the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, and big changes could be coming.
The Atlanta Hawks showed great potential early in the season, but things quickly deteriorated. Ultimately, the Hawks lost to the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat in the play-in rounds, missing the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Now, the Hawks are four years removed from their last playoff series win, when they defeated the top-seeded Philadelphia 76ers to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. While the team has been fairly patient with its core players during that time, big changes could be in the works this offseason.
The biggest piece of the puzzle obviously lies with star point guard Trae Young, and it would take a pretty bold move for the Hawks to get rid of the franchise's centerpiece. However, according to Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, some rival executives believe the Hawks may be willing to end the Young era once and for all.
"We mentioned in our recent Sunday Notes that trade speculation regarding Young has declined compared to a year ago," Stein and Fischer wrote. "The article covered a number of factors, including Young's successful backcourt partnership with Most Improved Player Award winner Dyshon Daniels and his improvement as a leader in his seventh season in the NBA."
"However, we should note that recent articles published here have drawn attention from representatives of multiple rival teams who have raised questions about the content in the article."
If the Hawks do end up trading Young, his market would be very attractive. He clearly has limitations on defense in the playoffs, but there are certainly teams that need an offensive engine that is as efficient as Young in both scoring and playmaking.
Ironically, the Orlando Magic would be a good option for the four-time All-Star, but that might make sense if the Hawks don't want to trade Young in the Eastern Conference. Therefore, a team like the Houston Rockets would be a better fit in the West.
